How the AI Overview checker works

  1. 01Enter a searchType the search as people would, and pick a country and a language. Questions such as “what is…” and “how to…” show AI Overviews more often than brand or product names.
  2. 02Google's results page is loaded and the overview readThe checker loads the page without a Google account. When Google writes the overview in after the page loads, the page is rendered in a browser so the whole overview and its sources can be read.
  3. 03You see what it citesWhether an overview appeared, the opening of its text, and every source it cites, in order, with its title and domain.

FAQ

Questions about AI Overviews and the checker

What is a Google AI Overview?

An AI-written summary Google shows above the results for some searches, with links to the pages it drew on. Being one of those cited sources is a new kind of visibility, next to ranking in the results below it.

Is the AI Overview checker free?

Yes. It needs no account and no card. Each visitor gets 3 checks a day, and a search someone checked in the same country and language in the last 24 hours is answered from that check without using one. A check can render a whole page in a browser, so the free allowance is small; from code, the API has no such limit (3,000 free credits on sign-up).

Why doesn't it match what I see on Google?

Google writes AI Overviews afresh: the same search can show a different overview, or none, a few minutes apart, and overviews differ by country, language and whether you are signed in. The checker reads one live, signed-out results page at the moment you run it.

Why does a check take longer than a SERP check?

For some searches Google adds the overview after the page has loaded. The checker then renders the page in a browser to read it in full, which takes longer than reading the page as served.

Can I check a city?

No, the checker works by country. Google no longer localises a results page by a location setting, so a city-level result would be a guess.

Can I track AI Overviews over time?

Yes, through the API. /serp returns the AI Overview's text and sources with every results page, for 3 credits a page, or 8 from November 1, 2026 when the overview has to be completed by rendering the page (the response says aioverview.rendered).

Need this in your app? Use the SERP API

The checker is one request to /serp. aioverview is null when Google showed none; otherwise it carries the text, the sources and whether it was read in full (complete).

curl "https://api.searlo.tech/api/v1/serp?q=what+is+a+serp+api&gl=us&hl=en" \
  -H "x-api-key: sk_your_api_key"
const res = await fetch(
  "https://api.searlo.tech/api/v1/serp?q=what+is+a+serp+api&gl=us&hl=en",
  { headers: { "x-api-key": process.env.SEARLO_API_KEY } },
);
const { aioverview } = await res.json();

if (!aioverview) console.log("No AI Overview");
else for (const s of aioverview.sources) console.log(s.domain, s.url);
import os, requests

serp = requests.get(
    "https://api.searlo.tech/api/v1/serp",
    params={"q": "what is a serp api", "gl": "us", "hl": "en"},
    headers={"x-api-key": os.environ["SEARLO_API_KEY"]},
    timeout=100,
).json()

aio = serp.get("aioverview")
print([s["domain"] for s in aio["sources"]] if aio else "No AI Overview")
