Best Rank Tracker APIs in 2026: Verified Pricing, No Fake Benchmarks

August 26, 202611 min read

The two products hiding behind one search

Search "best rank tracker with an API" and page one hands you two different product categories in one list. Picking the wrong one costs you a rebuild, so start here.

Category 1 - a rank-tracking platform that exposes an API. SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Nightwatch, Advanced Web Ranking, SEOptimer. You add keywords to a project, the vendor checks them on their schedule, and the API reads their stored history back to you. You get retries, history and a UI for free; you accept their keyword limits, their cadence and their per-seat pricing.

Category 2 - a SERP data API. Searlo, SerpAPI, DataForSEO, ScrapingDog, Bright Data. No project and no stored history: you request a keyword, you get the live results page with a position on every organic entry, and you build the tracker. You own the schedule, the storage and the alerting, and the unit cost is a per-query number you control.

And the free one everybody forgets: the Google Search Console API. Free, official, and limited to properties you own - average position rather than today's exact rank, delayed two to three days, and no competitor data at all. It answers "which queries already send me impressions"; it cannot answer "where do I rank right now" or "where does my competitor rank".

If you are building a product, an agency reporting tool or an internal monitor, you almost always want Category 2 plus Search Console. If you want a dashboard tomorrow, buy Category 1.

What we could verify, and what we could not

Every number below was read off the vendor's own page on 2026-08-26. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, the cell says so. We did not multiply a per-1K rate out into a volume the vendor never sells, and we did not fill a gap with a plausible number.

The cost question, with the arithmetic shown

Rank tracking cost is one number times three: keywords x checks per day x days. The trap is comparing headline per-1K rates instead of the plan that actually covers your volume, because every subscription provider gets cheaper as you buy more.

Your workloadChecks/monthSearloSerpAPI (plan that covers it)
100 keywords, daily3,000Free tier covers month one, then $3.99 (5,000 pack)$75/month (Developer - Starter's 1,000 is too small)
1,000 keywords, daily30,000~$12 (75,000 pack at $29.99 lasts 2.5 months)$275/month (Big Data)
10,000 keywords, daily300,000~$105 (250,000 + 75,000 packs = $104.98)$2,750/month (Infrastructure - Volume's 250,000 falls short)

Two structural differences matter as much as the rate. Searlo credits are a one-time purchase, so a quiet month costs nothing and there is no plan ceiling to renegotiate. Subscription plans bill whether you use the quota or not, and unused searches do not roll over.

Building the tracker: four moving parts

If you go the SERP-data-API route, the whole system is a keyword list, a scheduler, a request and a table.

Store the ranking URL next to the number. It is the only way to tell a real rank drop from Google swapping which of your pages ranks for that keyword - a distinction that looks identical in a positions-only history and has completely different fixes.

Then store the country and language codes with every reading. A rank is not one number; it is a number for a country, a language and a device. Average two markets together and you will hide the market that moved.

Per-provider notes

Searlo - cheapest verified per-check rate, organic only

$0.30 per 1,000 checks on the 250,000 pack, one GET per keyword, a position on every organic entry, 195 countries, no keyword cap and no project to configure. What it does not do: AI Overview text, SERP-feature blocks, or stored history - the response is organic results, and the history is yours to keep. If you need feature-block parsing across many engines, SerpAPI covers more surface than we do.

SerpAPI - widest coverage, most expensive at small volume

The published ladder runs from $25.00 per 1,000 on the $25 Starter plan down to $3.75 at a million searches a month. That top-end rate is genuinely competitive; the entry rate is over 80x ours. If you are tracking a few thousand keywords, this is the most expensive credible option on the list.

SE Ranking - the best of the project-based options

The API returns what a tracking platform knows and a raw SERP call does not: position *changes*, the landing page that ranked, search-feature presence, search volume, competitor positions and history for any date range. Pricing is $50 per 250,000 credits pay-as-you-go with 100,000 credits free and no card. The gap is that the credits-per-check figure is not published, so you cannot compute a cost per rank check before signing up - ask them for it.

ScrapingDog - cheapest advertised per-request rate

$0.001 per request on their own page, dropping "below $0.00029" at higher volume, 1,000 free credits. Note the unit: per request, not per 1,000, so read carefully when comparing.

DataForSEO - cheapest verified queue rate, but read the depth multiplier

$0.0006 per SERP on the standard queue (~5 minutes), $0.0012 on the priority queue (~1 minute), $0.002 live (~6 seconds), with a $50 minimum payment. That is $0.60, $1.20 and $2.00 per 1,000 respectively - the cheapest verified queue rate in this table.

The catch is the unit. One SERP is 10 results, and the depth parameter multiplies the cost for each additional 10. Rank tracking that only needs the top 10 is genuinely cheap here; tracking top-100 positions costs ten SERPs per keyword, which turns $0.60 per 1,000 into $6.00 per 1,000 on the standard queue and $20.00 live. Compare on the depth you actually need.

Bright Data - flat rate, generous free tier, proxy pedigree

$1.50 per 1,000 requests pay-as-you-go, or $499/month for 380,000 requests ($1.31 per 1,000) on the Scale plan with additional requests at $1.30. The free tier is the largest in this comparison at 5,000 records per month with no card. Billing is per successful request. It is built on their proxy network, so it is the right pick when you need raw HTML or unusual geo-targeting rather than parsed positions.

Serper - cheap, but you cannot check the price before signing up

Reported at $1.00 per 1,000 ($50 for 50,000 credits) falling to $0.30 per 1,000 on a $3,750 pack, with 2,500 free credits and six-month credit expiry. Every one of those figures comes from third-party write-ups, because serper.dev publishes no public pricing page - serper.dev/pricing returns a 404 - so we cannot verify them the way we verified the rest of this table. Treat them as indicative and confirm in the dashboard.

Google Search Console API - free and complementary

Use it for what it is uniquely good at: telling you which queries already show your pages, at what average position, with impressions and CTR. Then point a rank API at the queries it surfaces. The two together answer "what matters" and "what is happening today"; neither answers both.

Methodology, and why there is no speed table

What we did: read every vendor's public pricing and product page on 2026-08-26 and recorded the figures verbatim, marking as unreadable anything that did not render.

What we did not do: run a latency benchmark. We could publish one, and you should discount it exactly as much as you discount everyone else's, because the party running the test always wins it. The one vendor-run benchmark we found for this category is ScrapingDog's, which reports 1.31s for itself against 2.49s for SerpAPI, 5.81s for Bright Data, 8.87s for SearchAPI and 8.32-170s for ScraperAPI. Treat those as a vendor's numbers about competitors, not as a neutral result.

Searlo's own product pages describe sub-second responses. We have not published a reproducible benchmark behind that phrasing, so the honest instruction is: take the 3,000 free credits, run your own keywords from your own region, and time it. Every provider in Category 2 has a free tier big enough for that test, which makes the argument settleable in an afternoon.

Which to pick

Building a product on position data - SERP data API. Searlo if unit cost matters, SerpAPI if breadth of engines and SERP features matters more.

Want the tracking done for you - SE Ranking's API, and ask for the credits-per-check number first.

Reporting on sites you own, budget zero - Search Console API, and accept the lag.

Tracking competitors - Category 2 only. Platform APIs report on your projects; Search Console reports on your properties. Neither can see a competitor's rank the way a live SERP fetch can.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best rank tracker with an API?

It depends which of two products you need. If you want the vendor to store your keywords and run the daily checks, SE Ranking's Rank Tracking API is the strongest of the project-based options - it returns daily positions, position changes, ranking landing pages, top-100 results, competitor positions and history, and it publishes a free 100,000-credit trial with no card. If you are building the tracker yourself and want raw positions for any domain, a SERP data API is the right category: Searlo at $0.30 per 1,000 checks, or SerpAPI if you need its wider engine coverage and can absorb $15.00 per 1,000 on the Developer plan.

Is there a free rank tracking API?

There is no permanently free one worth building on, but three free entry points exist. Google Search Console's API is free forever and returns average position, clicks, impressions and CTR for queries on properties you own - no competitor data and a two-to-three day lag. SE Ranking publishes 100,000 free API credits with no credit card. Searlo gives 3,000 free credits on signup. Everything past those is paid.

Is there a Google keyword ranking API from Google itself?

Not for live positions. The Search Console API is the only official option and it reports your own property's average position, aggregated and delayed - it cannot tell you today's exact rank or any competitor's rank. Live position data comes from SERP APIs that fetch the results page for you.

How much does it cost to track 1,000 keywords daily?

That is about 30,000 checks a month. On Searlo's published packs that is roughly $9-$12 depending on which pack you buy; on SerpAPI the plan that covers 30,000 searches is Big Data at $275/month; on SE Ranking it depends on how many credits one check consumes, which the vendor does not publish.

What is a Google position checker API?

The same thing as a rank tracker API, described from the other end: an endpoint that returns the live results page for a keyword with a position number on every organic entry, so you can look up where a given domain sits. Whether it is called a position checker, a keyword ranking API or a rank tracker API is a naming difference, not a product difference - see our rank tracking API page for the request and response shape.

Why does this comparison have no latency benchmark?

Because we have not run one we would be willing to publish. Every latency table on a vendor's blog - ours included, if we published one - is run by a party with an interest in the result. The only vendor-run benchmark we found for this category is ScrapingDog's, cited and labelled in the methodology section. If speed decides your choice, test the two or three finalists yourself on your own keywords from your own region; all three of the free tiers above are large enough to do it.
